JOHN CORNISH - MANAGEMENT PROFILE

Twelve years Teaching at Burnie Technical College in the 70’s culminated in 1980 in John being appointed Principal of the West Coast Community College (TAFE) serving the Tasmanian mining industry.

In 1991 he moved to Launceston to take up the position of Deputy Principal Launceston College of TAFE.

Resigning in 1995 he successfully operated his own small business in the Gas Industry until 2000.

Elected as Chief Commissioner of the Scout Association (Tasmania) in 1998, in the ensuing 6 years he completed the restructuring of the Association to make it relevant and responsive to current community needs. This voluntary near full-time position, (similar to a Managing Director) involved the oversight of the activities of some 500 part time leaders and 2000 youth members. He served concurrently on the National Executive of the Association retiring in June 2004.

John’s proactive work in policy development and implementation was recognised by the Scout Association in 2004, honoring him with its highest award, The Silver Kangaroo for eminent achievement and meritorious service.

John's broad experience and  knowledge of management techniques and issues is now recognised and in demand by small business enterprises across Tasmania.

 Professional Skills and Experience

Initial training and experience in industry.

Substantial teaching experience in the TAFE environment. 

Experience as a union representative at State & National level, negotiating salary and award conditions. 

Mid and high level management and supervisory experience within the TAFE system. 

State and national representative on Management Association Executives. 

Formal Post Graduate Management and Administration qualifications. 

Experience in Negotiation and advocacy with inter– government agencies as a TAFE Principal and Deputy Director. 

Regular mediation and conflict resolution experience as a high level manager in TAFE and Scouts Australia. 

Experienced in handling highly sensitive confidential matters. 

Development of human resource strategies and practice within the TAFE sector. 

Managing Director of a large volunteer organisation. 

Author of papers on conflict resolution and counseling skills. 

Proven ability in dealing with people at all levels in government, private and community sectors. 

Owner / operator of a successful small business in the gas Industry. 

High-level computer competency using PC’s and small networks. 

A good understanding of current curriculum and training issues including competency based training and accreditation.
